Ylva Wintzell   was born in Sweden. She trained in Jazz and Ballet at the Academy of Ballet of Stockholm. She moved to California where she graduated from San Jose State in Fine Arts, French and Dance.

She started her ballroom training at Dance with Class in Saratoga in 1983. Teaching, competing and performing over the years, she has worked with a number of dance partners and coaches. In the American Smooth category she danced with Tom Newby, Dale Neal and Jeff Chandler. Tom and Ylva became California Starball Rising Star Champions (1989) and they also made it to the quarter final at USBC (The US Ballroom Championships). In a different dance, Hustle, she has collected a champion title from Hustle USA.

Ylva and Jeff Chandler, her dance partner for five years, together with their talented professional friends, put on a dinner and dance show called the Top Hat Club. The public could come in their best attire and dance, eat a light dinner and watch a show every hour. They would be entertained with a wide variety of dance and song numbers once a month.
